As you may know, there have been a series of shootings in the Uptown area in the last 24 hours, with the last one at Wilson and Hazel. The police are characterizing these sets of shootings as gang-related retaliations.

Please join us for an hour of Positive Loitering tomorrow night, Friday 7/29, from 7-8pm at one of the following corners:

  • Wilson and Hazel (Amy says she’ll be bringing chocolate chip cookies to this one)
  • Wilson and Magnolia
  • Sheridan and Leland

Positive Loitering is a way gives us a chance to meet each other, pet each other’s dogs, support the police by calling in suspicious activity, making it generally uncomfortable for “negative loitering” to take place, and demonstrate that there is a growing number of people that find these shootings unacceptable. The police support and greatly appreciate these Positive Loitering events. They are non-confrontational and truly demonstrate strength in numbers. Friendly dogs are certainly welcome.

Positive Loitering has been going on throughout the city for over a year. The Sheridan and Leland corner has a regular Friday night Positive Loitering meetup. Here’s an article that says more:  http://timeoutchicago.com/arts-culture/museums/68230/stand-in-the-place-where-you-live

It has been a relatively quiet summer, and we would like it to stay that way. Your presence makes the difference for our safety. Please spread the word to your neighbors– See you tomorrow night!

Dear Friend, ,

Last night, just before midnight, two Uptown men were shot west of Truman College at 1255 West Wilson. Soon after, at approximately 12:30AM, another man from the south side of the city was shot near Uplift High School.   The police believe these shootings are part of the same incident and believe they are gang-related. At this time, no one has been arrested.

The incident is still under investigation with Area 3 Detectives. Police presence has been increased in the area.

Positive loitering will occur tomorrow night, Friday, July 29, 2011, at 7:00 PM, at the corner of Wilson and Hazel. We will then walk west to Wilson and Magnolia. Please support our neighborhood by attending this event.

Best,

Signature James

Dear Friend,

I want to thank the Chicago Police Narcotics and Gang Investigations Units, the Cook County State’s Attorney’s Office, the H.I.D.T.A. (High Intensity Drug Trafficking Areas), and our own 23rd Police District for their successful four month investigation called “Operation Uptown Girl.”

Ric Addy owns Shake, Rattle and Read, a 45-year-old record and bookstore in Chicago’s Uptown neighborhood. Each day, familiar faces from the neighborhood pass through his store.

“On the North Side, Uptown is the biggest melting pot of any neighborhood,” he said “I like the mix of people.”

But that diverse mix is starting to change as the neighborhood’s landscape is changing with gentrification. more
